Claude Design Launches from Anthropic Labs: What It Is and What Changed Since

On April 17, 2026, Anthropic Labs launched Claude Design, a product for making visual work with Claude: interactive prototypes, design systems, slide decks, one-pagers, and marketing assets. You describe what you need, Claude builds a first version, and you refine it through conversation, comments, direct edits, and sliders Claude generates for you.

This article covers what launched, how Claude Design works, what changed in the months since, and how it relates to Claude Cowork and the Design plugin. One common confusion first: Claude Design is its own product, not a Cowork plugin, although since September 2026 you can use it from inside any Claude conversation.

Updated September 27, 2026

What launched on April 17, 2026

  • Product: Claude Design, the first release from Anthropic Labs, the team that builds experimental products.
  • Model: Claude Opus 4.7, Anthropic's strongest vision model at the time.
  • Availability: a research preview for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers, rolling out gradually. Enterprise organizations had it off by default until an admin enabled it in Organization settings.
  • Cost: included in the subscription and drawing on plan usage limits, with optional extra usage.
  • Outputs: prototypes, design systems, slide decks, one-pagers, and other visual assets.

The launch landed in a charged week. On April 14, Anthropic's chief product officer, Mike Krieger, resigned from Figma's board, the same day reports emerged that Anthropic was preparing design tools that could compete with Figma. Three days later, Claude Design went live, and coverage framed it as Anthropic's move into the design canvas.

How Claude Design works

1. Build a design system once

During onboarding, Claude reads your codebase and design files and builds a design system for your team: colors, typography, and components. Every later project uses it automatically, so a quick prototype already looks like your product. Teams can keep more than one design system, for example one per brand.

2. Start from almost anything

You can start from a text prompt, images, documents such as DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX, your codebase, or a web capture tool that grabs elements from an existing website.

3. Refine the way designers do

  • Leave inline comments on a specific element.
  • Edit text directly on the canvas.
  • Use custom sliders that Claude creates for spacing, color, or layout, instead of re-prompting.
  • Keep talking to Claude for bigger changes.

4. Share and export

Share inside your organization as private, view-only, or editable, and work on a design together in a group conversation. Export to PDF, PPTX, standalone HTML, or send it to Canva. For product work, Claude Design packages a handoff bundle that Claude Code can build from.

Who Claude Design is for

RoleTypical use
DesignersTurn static mockups into shareable interactive prototypes for feedback and user tests, without code review
Product managersSketch feature flows, then hand them to Claude Code to build or to designers to refine
Founders and salesGo from a rough outline to an on-brand slide deck in minutes, then export to PPTX or Canva
MarketersProduce one-pagers and campaign assets that follow the brand's design system

At launch, Anthropic highlighted feedback from Canva co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins, and from product teams at Brilliant and Datadog. Anthropic later said more than one million people used Claude Design in its first week.

What changed after launch

June 2026: staying on brand

  • Design system import was rebuilt to pull more precisely from GitHub repositories, design files, or uploads, and a new admin role can approve standard systems and lock edits.
  • The canvas gained layout controls to drag, resize, and align elements, plus hundreds of stability fixes.
  • A /design-sync command brings design systems into Claude Code, and designs can hand off to Claude Code, which continues from the existing work.
  • New connections with Adobe, Base44, Canva, Gamma, Lovable, Miro, Replit, Vercel, and Wix.
  • Claude Design moved to beta and began sharing usage limits with the rest of your Claude work. It is on by default for Pro, Max, and Team and off by default for Enterprise.

August and September 2026: design everywhere

In August, a research preview brought the artboard workflow into Claude Code's command line and desktop app through /design, so Claude drafts editable artboards for a UI and then implements the one you pick. In September, as chat and Cowork merged into one Claude, you could ask for a design, deck, or document in any conversation, including Claude Code and the Artifacts tab, and edit it with Claude or directly. Slide decks also got their own starting point in Claude Slides.

Claude Design, Claude Cowork, and the Design plugin

Three things with similar names are easy to mix up:

What it isBest for
Claude DesignAnthropic Labs product with a visual canvas and design systemsPrototypes, decks, one-pagers, on-brand visuals
Claude CoworkClaude's agent for multi-step knowledge work on your files and toolsResearch, documents, spreadsheets, reports
Design pluginAn open source Cowork plugin with design skillsCritiques, UX copy, accessibility reviews, handoff notes

They work well together. Cowork can gather research and write the narrative for a launch, Claude Design can turn it into a deck or landing page prototype in your brand, and the Design plugin can run an accessibility review or write UX copy. Browse the plugin and its skills in our Cowork plugins directory, and see what Cowork does on its own in What is Claude Cowork.

A sample walkthrough: a launch one-pager

To make this concrete, here is how a product marketer might produce a one-page overview for a new feature in about half an hour.

  1. Ask Cowork to read the spec, the release notes, and three customer interviews in a shared folder, and draft the headline, three benefits, and a short proof point for each.
  2. Review the draft, cut what is weak, and paste the final copy into a new design request: “A one-page overview for existing customers, our brand, one hero image area, three benefit blocks, and a call to action.”
  3. Let the first version render, then leave comments directly on the parts that need work: a heading that wraps badly, an icon that feels off, a block that should be wider.
  4. Use the generated sliders to try a denser or airier layout without writing another prompt.
  5. Share a view-only link with the product lead for sign-off, apply their comments, and export a PDF for sales and an HTML version for the help center.

The time saving is not the typing; it is skipping the blank page and the back-and-forth over a written brief. Everyone reacts to something real from the first minutes.

Does Claude Design replace Figma or Canva?

Not for most teams, at least not yet. Claude Design is strongest at the zero-to-one stage: first drafts of flows, pages, and decks that used to take days. Figma remains the home for detailed product design, shared component libraries across many squads, and precise interaction work. Canva remains the easy tool for non-designers to finish and publish assets, and Claude Design exports directly to it.

The realistic change is in who makes the first version. Product managers, founders, and marketers can now bring a concrete, on-brand draft to a designer instead of a written brief, which shifts designers' time toward refinement, systems, and research.

Limits and things to watch

  • Usage. Visual generation is heavy. Big prototypes and design system imports use a noticeable share of plan limits, which are now shared with the rest of your Claude work.
  • Enterprise setup. Admins must turn Claude Design on and may lock approved design systems.
  • Beta status. Features and names are still changing; check the release notes before building a process around a specific button.
  • Review. Treat outputs as drafts. Check accessibility, copy, and data before anything ships.

Questions to settle before a team rollout

  • Who owns the brand source? Decide which repository or file set is the source of truth, and who can approve changes to it.
  • Who can share what? Agree on when work stays private, when a view-only link is enough, and who may edit.
  • Where do finished files live? Exports should land in the same shared drive or folder your team already uses, not in personal downloads.
  • What needs human review? Legal claims, pricing, customer names, and accessibility should always get a person's check before publishing.
  • How will you track usage? Visual work draws down plan limits faster than chat, so watch usage during the first month.

For Cowork users, the practical takeaway is that research, writing, and layout now happen in one account and one set of limits. It pays to keep your instructions and skills tidy, because the same standing context carries into every kind of work. Our Customize guide shows how to organize it.

How to get started

  1. Make sure you are on a paid Claude plan; on Enterprise, ask an admin to enable Claude Design.
  2. Open Claude Design from Claude, or simply ask for a design in any conversation.
  3. Set up a design system from your codebase, design files, or uploads, so every draft is on brand.
  4. Start with something small and real, such as a one-page product overview or a single feature flow.
  5. Refine with comments and sliders, then export to PPTX, PDF, HTML, or Canva, or hand off to Claude Code.

If you already use Cowork for research and writing, try one end-to-end run: have Cowork draft the content from your files, then ask Claude Design to lay it out as a deck. Check plan limits first if you expect to do a lot of visual work.
