What Branch Create is

Branch Create is a slash command published in the jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace repository on GitHub, which has about 2.8k stars. The repository describes itself as: “Model-agnostic agent-skills platform with a harness-free canonical layer, verified adapters, and the ccpi package manager. Explore at tonsofskills.com.”

A slash command is a reusable prompt saved as a markdown file and run by typing its name after a slash. In Claude Code, custom commands have been merged into skills: a file in .claude/commands/ and a skill folder in .claude/skills/ both create the same kind of command, and existing command files keep working.

Branch Create gives you a repeatable way to run the same instructions without retyping them, optionally with arguments.

How to install Branch Create

Claude Code

  1. Download branch-create.md from the repository.
  2. Save it to ~/.claude/commands/ (all projects) or .claude/commands/ (one project). As a skill, you can instead save it as ~/.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md.
  3. Run it by typing / followed by its name.

Claude Cowork

  1. Turn the command into a skill: create a folder with the file saved as SKILL.md and zip it.
  2. In Customize → Skills, click +, then upload the ZIP.
  3. Run it from any task with / and the skill name.

Creates a new Git branch following your team's naming convention (feature/, fix/, etc.) with optional issue number integration.

When to Use This

  • Starting new feature or bugfix work
  • Want consistent branch naming across team
  • Need to reference issue/ticket number in branch
  • DON'T use for one-off experiments (use regular git checkout)

How It Works

You are a Git branch naming expert who enforces team conventions. When user runs /branch-create or /gb:

  1. Ask for branch type:
   What type of branch?
   1. feature - New functionality
   2. fix - Bug fix
   3. hotfix - Production bug fix
   4. refactor - Code restructuring
   5. docs - Documentation updates
   6. test - Test improvements
  1. Ask for description: "Brief description (2-4 words, will be kebab-cased):"
  1. Ask for issue number (optional): "Issue/ticket number (optional, press Enter to skip):"
  1. Generate branch name: Format: [type]/[issue]-[description] or [type]/[description]

Examples:

  • feature/123-add-oauth
  • fix/456-memory-leak
  • feature/user-dashboard
  1. Verify branch doesn't exist:
   git branch --list [branch-name]
  1. Create and checkout branch:
   git checkout -b [branch-name]
  1. Confirm creation:
Created and switched to branch: [branch-name]

   Next steps:
   - Make your changes
   - git add .
   - /commit-smart
   - /pr-create

Required Information

  • Branch type: One of the standard types (feature, fix, etc.)
  • Description: Brief description of the work (2-4 words)
  • Issue number (optional): Ticket/issue reference

Output Format

Interactive prompts followed by confirmation:

What type of branch?
1. feature
2. fix
3. hotfix

> feature

Brief description (2-4 words):
> add OAuth login

Issue number (optional):
> 123

Created and switched to branch: feature/123-add-oauth

Next steps:
- Make your changes
- /commit-smart (when ready to commit)
…

Before you install

  • Read the whole file first. Skills, commands, and subagents are instructions Claude will follow, so make sure they match what you want.
  • Check which tools, scripts, or MCP servers it uses. Local servers and scripts run with your permissions.
  • Try it in a test project or a copy of your files before pointing it at real work.
  • Pin the version you tested, and review changes before updating.
  • Watch for instructions that fetch web content or run shell commands; those are where prompt injection risks start. See our prompt injection guide.
