What Context7 is

Context7 is a plugin published in the anthropics/claude-plugins-official repository on GitHub, which has about 37.1k stars. The repository describes itself as: “Official, Anthropic-managed directory of high quality Claude Code Plugins.”

A plugin is a package that bundles skills, slash commands, subagents, hooks, and MCP connectors so they install together. Plugins are plain files with a manifest at .claude-plugin/plugin.json, and they work in both Claude Code and Claude Cowork.

Installing Context7 adds everything it ships in one step. Connectors inside a plugin still need to be connected separately, and hooks and subagents only run in Cowork and Claude Code, not in regular chat.

How to install Context7

Claude Code

  1. Add the repository as a plugin marketplace: claude plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-official
  2. Install the plugin: claude plugin install context7@<marketplace-name>, using the marketplace name from the repository's .claude-plugin/marketplace.json.
  3. Restart the session if the new skills or commands don't appear straight away.

Claude Cowork

  1. Open Customize → Plugins and choose Add marketplace.
  2. Enter anthropics/claude-plugins-official (the owner/repo shorthand works for GitHub).
  3. Find Context7 in the list, click Install, then connect any connectors it needs from its Connectors tab.

Inside the source file

Context7 solves a common problem with AI coding assistants: outdated training data and hallucinated APIs. Instead of relying on stale knowledge, Context7 fetches current documentation and code examples directly from source repositories.

This plugin connects Claude Code to Context7's hosted remote MCP server (https://mcp.context7.com/mcp) — no local Node.js, npm, or npx required.

Available Tools

  • resolve-library-id — searches for libraries and returns Context7-compatible identifiers (e.g. /vercel/next.js) plus available versions.
  • query-docs — fetches documentation for a specific library, ranked by relevance to your question.

API Key (optional)

Without an API key the plugin connects anonymously and shares the anonymous rate limits. To use your own plan, create an API key in the Context7 dashboard and export it as an environment variable before launching Claude Code:

# e.g. in ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc
export CONTEXT7_API_KEY="your-api-key"

The plugin's MCP server configuration picks up CONTEXT7_API_KEY automatically. Restart Claude Code after setting it, then verify usage in the dashboard.

Usage

The plugin works automatically when you ask about libraries:

  • "How do I set up authentication in Next.js 15?"
  • "Show me React Server Components examples"
  • "What's the Prisma syntax for relations?"

To get documentation for a specific version, include the version in the library ID (e.g. /vercel/next.js/v15.1.8). The resolve-library-id tool returns available versions, so you can pick the one that matches your project.

Before you install

  • Read the whole file first. Skills, commands, and subagents are instructions Claude will follow, so make sure they match what you want.
  • Check which tools, scripts, or MCP servers it uses. Local servers and scripts run with your permissions.
  • Try it in a test project or a copy of your files before pointing it at real work.
  • Pin the version you tested, and review changes before updating.
  • Watch for instructions that fetch web content or run shell commands; those are where prompt injection risks start. See our prompt injection guide.
