What Hooks Eval is

Hooks Eval is a slash command published in the athola/claude-night-market repository on GitHub, which has about 339 stars. The repository describes itself as: “23 Claude Code plugins: TDD enforcement hooks, git/PR workflows, spec-driven development, code review, project lifecycle, fix-from-error, maintenance automation, context optimization, research, and multi-LLM delegation. 186 skills, 128 commands, 54 agents.”

A slash command is a reusable prompt saved as a markdown file and run by typing its name after a slash. In Claude Code, custom commands have been merged into skills: a file in .claude/commands/ and a skill folder in .claude/skills/ both create the same kind of command, and existing command files keep working.

Hooks Eval gives you a repeatable way to run the same instructions without retyping them, optionally with arguments.

How to install Hooks Eval

Claude Code

  1. Download hooks-eval.md from the repository.
  2. Save it to ~/.claude/commands/ (all projects) or .claude/commands/ (one project). As a skill, you can instead save it as ~/.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md.
  3. Run it by typing / followed by its name.

Claude Cowork

  1. Turn the command into a skill: create a folder with the file saved as SKILL.md and zip it.
  2. In Customize → Skills, click +, then upload the ZIP.
  3. Run it from any task with / and the skill name.

Inside the source file

An excerpt from plugins/abstract/commands/hooks-eval.md, shared under the repository's MIT license. Read the full file on GitHub.

Detailed evaluation framework for analyzing all hooks within a plugin (or across project/global scopes) with advanced security scanning, performance benchmarking, and compliance validation. Built on the same principles as skills-eval but specifically tailored for Claude Code hook architecture.

Invoke Skill(abstract:hooks-eval), which carries the evaluation criteria, the SDK hook types and the integration points.

When To Use

Use this command when you need to:

  • Evaluating all hooks in a plugin comprehensively
  • Comparing multiple hooks
  • Validating quality gates across hook portfolio
  • Security scanning entire plugin's hooks

When NOT To Use

Avoid this command if:

  • Validating specific hook - use /validate-hook instead
  • Creating new hooks - use /create-hook instead

Usage

# Evaluate all hooks in current plugin
/hooks-eval

# Evaluate specific plugin directory
/hooks-eval /path/to/plugin

# Security-focused evaluation
/hooks-eval --security-only

# Performance benchmarking
/hooks-eval --performance-baseline

# Compliance checking
/hooks-eval --compliance-report

# Generate detailed report
/hooks-eval --detailed --format detailed
…

Options

Scope Selection

  • --plugin : Specific plugin directory (default: current plugin)
  • --scope : Evaluate specific scope (plugin, project, global)
  • --all-scopes: Evaluate all scopes in priority order
  • --include-external: Include hooks from external dependencies

Analysis Focus

  • --security-only: Focus exclusively on security vulnerabilities
  • --performance-check: Analyze execution performance and resource usage
  • --compliance-check: Validate against hook development standards
  • --detailed: Full analysis across all dimensions (default)

Output Control

  • --format : Output format (summary, detailed, json, sarif, dashboard)
  • --output : Write results to file
  • --verbose: Show detailed analysis and recommendations
  • --quiet: Minimal output, exit codes only
  • --severity : Minimum severity level to report

Quality Gates

  • --quality-gate: Enable quality gate checking with thresholds
  • --fail-on : Fail exit on specific severity level
  • --baseline : Compare against previous evaluation baseline

Implementation

python3 ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/hooks_eval/hooks_auditor.py \
  --plugin-path "${1:-.}" \
  --scope "${2:-plugin}" \
  --analysis-type "${3:-detailed}" \
  --format "${4:-summary}"

Quality Gates

Default quality gate thresholds can be customized:

quality_gates:
  security_score: ">= 80"
  performance_score: ">= 70"
  compliance_score: ">= 85"
  reliability_score: ">= 85"
  overall_score: ">= 75"
  max_critical_issues: 0
  max_high_issues: 2

Exit Codes

  • 0: Success - all quality gates passed
  • 1: Warnings - quality gates passed but issues found
  • 2: Quality gate failure - scores below thresholds
  • 3: Critical issues - security vulnerabilities found
  • 4: Execution error - analysis failed to complete

  • /validate-hook - Individual hook validation (security, performance, compliance)
  • /validate-plugin - Complete plugin structure validation
  • /skills-eval - Skill quality evaluation framework

    critical_score: 80
    high_score: 70

  performance_thresholds:
    pre_tool_use_max_ms: 100
    post_tool_use_max_ms: 200
    max_memory_mb: 50

  compliance_requirements:
    require_documentation: true
    require_error_handling: true
    require_timeout_config: true

  custom_rules:
    - name: "no-hardcoded-secrets"
      pattern: "password|secret|token"
…

Before you install

  • Read the whole file first. Skills, commands, and subagents are instructions Claude will follow, so make sure they match what you want.
  • Check which tools, scripts, or MCP servers it uses. Local servers and scripts run with your permissions.
  • Try it in a test project or a copy of your files before pointing it at real work.
  • Pin the version you tested, and review changes before updating.
  • Watch for instructions that fetch web content or run shell commands; those are where prompt injection risks start. See our prompt injection guide.
