Claude Docs and Claude Slides: How to Write, Share, and Present with Claude
Claude Docs and Claude Slides launched in beta on September 16, 2026, the same day Anthropic merged Claude chat and Claude Cowork into one Claude. Claude Docs gives you a living document that you, your teammates, and Claude write together. Claude Slides turns notes, reports, or the work already in your conversation into a deck you can edit, present, and download as PowerPoint or PDF.
This guide covers who can use Claude Docs and Claude Slides, how to start one, how editing and comments work, sharing rules by plan, export formats, current limits, and how the two compare with Claude for PowerPoint and Claude in Google Docs. If you missed the bigger change, start with our explainer on the Cowork merge.

Who can use Claude Docs and Claude Slides
| Plan | Claude Docs | Claude Slides |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Not available | Not available as a canvas; basic file creation still works |
| Pro | Beta, on by default | Beta, on by default |
| Max | Beta, on by default | Beta, on by default |
| Team | Beta, on by default | Beta, on by default |
| Enterprise | Off until an owner turns it on in Organization settings | Off until an owner turns it on |
Both tools arrive with the merged Claude experience, which is rolling out gradually, starting with Pro and Max. If your message box still shows separate Chat and Cowork options, your account has not moved yet. Claude Docs is also unavailable to organizations that use customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK), zero data retention, or HIPAA-ready configurations.
Everything you create counts toward your plan's usage limits, and long docs or large decks use more than a quick chat. See our pricing overview if you expect heavy use.
Claude Docs: living documents you write with Claude
Three ways to start a doc
- Ask in any conversation. Say what you need, such as "a one-page project brief from these meeting notes." Claude asks clarifying questions up front, drafts the doc in a panel beside the chat, and leaves comments explaining its choices.
- Use a template. Open the Artifacts tab and pick a doc template.
- Type
/docsin the message box to start one directly.
Claude draws on the same context as any other task: files you attach, your memory, project knowledge, installed skills, and connected apps such as Google Drive or Microsoft 365. A doc built inside a project can pull in that project's files without you pasting anything. Our Customize guide explains how to set up instructions and skills so drafts follow your house style.
Editing: type, ask, or comment
- Type directly into the doc, like any editor.
- Ask in the chat, for example "tighten the intro and add a risks section."
- Select text and comment. Mention @Claude in the comment and Claude replies in the thread, makes the change, and explains what it did.
Several people can edit the same doc at once alongside Claude, and edits appear in real time. Every change is attributed to whoever made it, a person or Claude, so it is clear which lines a teammate wrote and which Claude rewrote.
Structure and visuals
Claude Docs supports headings, tables, rich text formatting, and multiple tabs, which work like sections of a notebook. You can ask Claude to add charts, diagrams, graphs, and timelines. One catch: charts do not refresh on their own when the data in a connected app changes. Ask Claude to update them with the latest numbers before you share.
Claude Slides: decks you can edit, present, and export
Claude Slides builds a deck on an editable canvas inside Claude. It works best when you already have the substance, such as notes, a report, a spreadsheet, or a long chat, and need a first draft in minutes.
Starting a deck
- Ask for a deck in any conversation, for example "turn this quarterly report into eight slides for the leadership meeting."
- Pick a slide template from the Artifacts tab.
- Convert an existing Claude Doc into a presentation, so the doc and the deck tell the same story.
Editing and presenting
You can edit a slide directly, select an element and leave a comment for Claude to act on, or ask for changes in the chat, such as "merge slides 3 and 4" or "make the chart on slide 6 a bar chart." When the deck is ready, present it straight from Claude, then download it as PowerPoint (.pptx) or PDF, or share a link that also opens on phones.
Recurring decks
Because Slides lives in the same Claude that runs scheduled tasks, a weekly deck can build itself. Anthropic's launch example asks Claude for a weekly report, a five-slide summary for leadership, and a schedule to repeat it. Claude gathers the data from connected tools, writes the doc, builds the matching slides, and has both ready on Monday.
Export formats
| Tool | Export to |
|---|---|
| Claude Docs | Word (.docx), PDF, Markdown (.md), Google Docs, or convert to Claude Slides |
| Claude Slides | PowerPoint (.pptx), PDF, or a share link |
To export from Claude Docs, click Export and pick a format. Exported Word files and decks open as normal files, so you can finish them in Word, PowerPoint, or Google Docs. Treat every export as a draft: check numbers, names, dates, and claims before a doc goes to a client or a deck goes in front of a board.
Current limits of the beta
- No version history. You cannot roll a doc back to an earlier state, so export a copy before a big rewrite.
- No comment-only access. Reviewers need edit rights to comment.
- Charts do not auto-update from connected apps; ask Claude to refresh them.
- Mobile is view-only. The iOS and Android apps open Claude Docs but cannot edit them.
- No external sharing on Team and Enterprise.
- Compliance logging is incomplete. Activity inside docs is not yet recorded in the Compliance API, which matters for regulated teams.
- Deletion is permanent. There is no trash folder to restore from.
These gaps are typical of a first beta and several are likely to close. For now, keep anything that needs an audit trail or long-term versioning in your document system of record, and use Claude Docs for drafting and collaboration.
Claude Slides vs Claude for PowerPoint vs Claude in Google Workspace
Anthropic now offers several ways to make documents and slides, and the names are easy to mix up:
| Tool | Where it runs | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Docs | Inside Claude | Drafting and co-writing with teammates and Claude, then exporting |
| Claude Slides | Inside Claude | A fast first deck from notes, reports, or a conversation |
| Claude for PowerPoint | An add-in inside PowerPoint | Working on your own template, slide by slide |
| Claude in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides | A sidebar inside Google Workspace (beta) | Editing the one file you have open, with changes in Google's version history |
| Claude Design | Inside Claude or the standalone product | On-brand visual work, prototypes, and design systems |
A practical split: use Claude Docs and Claude Slides when the content does not exist yet and Claude should assemble it from your files and apps. Use the PowerPoint add-in or the Google Workspace sidebar when a file already exists and must stay in that tool. The Google sidebar works only on the file it is opened in; it cannot open or create other files in Drive. If your team lives in Microsoft tools, our Microsoft 365 integration guide shows how Claude reads from SharePoint and OneDrive.
A simple workflow to try first
- Attach last week's notes or connect the drive where they live.
- Ask: "Write a two-page status doc from these notes with a decisions table and open risks."
- Answer Claude's clarifying questions, then read its comments on the draft.
- Share the doc with one teammate as an editor and let them comment, mentioning @Claude for changes.
- Ask Claude to turn the final doc into a six-slide deck, then present it from Claude or download the PowerPoint.
- If the format works, schedule it to run every week.
This one loop shows most of what the beta can do: context from your files, co-editing, comments, conversion from doc to deck, export, and scheduling. If something does not appear, such as a missing Export button or no doc panel, check that your account has the merged experience, and see our troubleshooting guide for common app issues.
